Four years ago May, it was me, the Missus, our Treasurer and two lads. Meetings were sit-around-and-talk, and make Costume. The RenScots started with Myself, the Missus, and 5 college boys(they drafted us). And you will start creating your own style of Paperwork=applications, policies, all the things that make a group go.

Lesser, more variable things, like Dues, the membership year, and so on, can be handled in a seperate set of By-laws.

Voting rights, membership requirements, your goals, making amendments/changes, should all be parts of your group's constitution. Then, you figure out what Officers you need, and how Offices are earned or appointed. If you plan on becoming Incorporated, or going for Charitable Non-Profit status, (501.c.3) it will have to pass both state and Federal muster. But it needs checking out.Īuthenticity standards are nice, but before you worry about them, you need a constitution people can live with. Are you planning on joining them, or (if I remember correctly) Hiring lawyers for the duration? Then again, that whole idea may have died. I believe that the USA branch of the Clan MacLachlan Society has just such a re-enactment group under their wing. I have started 3 Scout Troops from Scratch, one CB Radio Volunteer Assistance group, and my current bunch, The RenaissanceScots LHA, Inc.įirst, do some research on what's already out there. So long as you keep at it, your group will exist and keep going forward. Make things for the group and individuals in workshops. If you try to set one later, it will cause no end of trouble in an already established group. Where you set it isn't so much the problem so long as you set one. One thing to keep in mind is you need to set your bar for minimum standards of authenticity right now. Ask questions just like the one your asking here. Find a goup in your era you wish to emulate in the way of authenticity, then get and keep in contact with them.

Do your research, as everyone in your group will be looking to you for information as you are the one starting it. Also, you need a clear idea of the focus for your group - again, you seem to have it. Secondly, you need a clear idea of what you want to do (reenactmen, living history - you already have the era down firm). It is not uncommon to have an almost complete turnover in personel in the first few years. OK, the first thing to keep in mind is perseverence.
